There are plenty of sharp corners and wide fenders on Subaru’s first electric SUV. The Solterra’s off-road prowess is hinted at by substantial black cladding and a smoothed-over grille in front. For all that it’s a modern vehicle, it lacks the quality feel of either the Volkswagen ID.4 or Ford Mustang Mach-E.
Standard equipment in the Subaru Solterra SUV includes LED headlights, black mirror housings, and 18-inch alloy wheels. The taillights and headlights are also beautifully crafted, but the rear end has a somewhat rugged appearance. Subaru claims that the twin liftgate spoilers on the mid-level trim help regulate airflow. The higher-end models add fog lights, roof rails, a hydraulic rear liftgate, and a glass roof.
Interior
The interior of the Solterra has an extensive touchscreen infotainment system, a raised center console, and what appears to be a rotary gear shift knob. The cabin seems to have a relaxed vibe with a high windscreen, big side windows, and a panoramic sunroof. A pleasing visual effect is further enhanced by using a variety of exciting textures. There are a lot of places to put things in the Solterra, including a big center console bin, and when the back seats are folded down, it can carry up to 30 cubic feet of stuff.
The 12.3-inch touchscreen in the center of the dash houses the Solterra’s infotainment system. Wireless phone charging and Apple CarPlay are included in all models. The HVAC system can be controlled remotely using a smartphone app, for example, to pre-condition the cabin or to close and unlock the doors. Engine

For those who have driven a Mustang Mach-E or Tesla Model-Y, the Solterra will feel slow. Performance-wise, it’s the same as gas-powered crossovers, but torque is always available, so pulling out to pass doesn’t require winding up to speed as an Outback or Forester does.
The single-ratio reduction transaxles, on the other hand, smoothly deliver power. If you’re used to driving a Forester with a four-cylinder gas engine and a CVT, this is a far more polished experience. The regenerative braking force selection system has four settings and three modes. The Snow/Dirt and Deep Snow/Mud modes of the X-Mode system make quick work of tricky situations.
