All of this attention to detail has made it a good car, but not quite a great one. The Impreza is one step away from greatness, and it has nothing to do with the ride, build quality, standard specification, or safety levels. It’s all to do with its engine. The naturally-aspirated 2.0-liter four-cylinder engine has an output of just 152 horsepower and 145 lb-ft of torque, mated to either a five-speed manual gearbox or a whiny, dimwitted CVT auto.

Paddle shifters on the steering wheel are standard, as are heated front seats, adaptive cruise control, lane-keeping assistance, an upgraded infotainment system with SiriusXM satellite radio, an additional USB port, and smartphone integration apps. All of these features come standard. The lone option package includes blind-spot monitoring and rear cross-traffic warning, including a power-adjustable driver’s seat and a sunroof. Passive hands-free entry and push-button start are also included.
There’s no denying that the inside of the Subaru Impreza serves a purpose. On top of that, the secondary screen on the top of the dashboard is more valuable than you might think. The hatchback version of the Impreza provides excellent visibility. Some passengers may find the rear seats a touch cramped, especially those over 6 feet tall. It’s simple to enter and exit because of the enormous door apertures. The steering wheel can be moved up and down and tilted to fit drivers of all sizes.
The middle seat in the second row of the Impreza is exclusively suitable for children. Because the Impreza is so spacious in every other area, the single limitation is shoulder room. The headroom in both the front and back seats is adequate in this sector, with 39.8 inches and 38 inches. Front passengers get 43.1 inches of legroom, while backseat occupants get 36.5 inches. The Impreza’s weak engine is its most glaring flaw. Its 0 to 60 mph time of 9.4 seconds is among the worst in its class, and the transmission can amplify the engine’s buzzy and sluggish nature. Making a passing move or merging into oncoming traffic takes far longer and more thought than it should. However, everything is not lost. The car’s brakes are solid and responsive, making it simple to bring it to a complete stop. It’s sportier than the steering in most competitors, but it’s still quick and responsive. All-wheel drive makes the Impreza feel more stable than other small sedans, and the body roll is well controlled.
