2024 Subaru WRX STI Concept, Release Date, Horsepower

2024 Subaru WRX STI Concept, Release Date, HorsepowerFor the past two years, Subaru has teased fans eager for information on the next WRX, promising that the new affordable, AWD, high-performance compact benchmark would drop the Impreza name and platform, boast at least 304 horsepower in STI trim, and feature a turbocharged 2.0-liter four-cylinder engine. We also saw a few WRX prototypes with current-generation Impreza bodywork but no word on the future WRX. Until now, when Subaru released a sneak peek of the car in the shape of the WRX concept, which made its debut at the 2013 New York auto show.

Subaru considers the WRX concept a design study, but its low, broad, and muscular four-door sedan bodywork strongly foreshadows the impending production car’s style. It’s covered in blisters, bulges, and wrinkles and looks nothing like the rest of Subaru’s lineup.

2024 Subaru WRX STI Redesign

In 2024, the WRX will get a new look, while the even faster WRX STI will get the same treatment. Other changes include a bigger turbo-4 engine, a speedier CVT, a new GT model with adaptive mufflers, and more standard convenience and safety features.

The WRX’s design is based on the Impreza compact car, as it has always been. Except for dark cladding around the wheel cutouts, the style is an extension of the previous design. The fender haunches are defined, the rear diffuser has more creases, and the front grille spreads wider behind a prominent hood scoop. It’s also a little longer, lower, and broader than the previous model.

Interior

The WRX’s interior is similar to other recent Subaru models, except carbon-fiber-like elements and red-distance stitching. There’s a steering reel with a thick rim and a flat bottom and a set of analog gauges. The top-tier GT version has a microsuede-covered, massively bolstered Recaro front seat. The 60/40 split-folding back seat can be used to reach the trunk from within the vehicle.

Every WRX comes with an 11.6-inch touchscreen infotainment system that is angled vertically. Although it relies primarily on touch inputs, it has some physical controls for the climate system and sound. A Harman-Kardon sound system with 11 speakers is also offered. Apple CarPlay and Android Auto are among the standard entertainment features on the WRX.

Engine

Although the engine is unique to the WRX, it is not new to Subaru’s lineup. The Legacy, Outback, and Ascent all have the same 2.4-liter turbocharged flat-4 engine, although it has a different turbocharger and an electronic wastegate. The engine produces 271 horsepower and 258 pound-feet of torque, which is a 3 horsepower increase over last year’s model. However, Subaru claims that the additional displacement and the new turbo’s wastegate and air bypass valves improve responsiveness. It has almost the same energy as the previous engine, but the torque is easier to get at lower rpm, helpful while scooting uphill between turns. When paired with the 6-speed manual, this powerplant seems well at home on these winding roads.

The engine is less gratifying on the highway. The low 6,000-rpm redline might creep up on you and leave you with no power, an issue in a passing motion. Because torque is the focus, rather than the free-revving and high redlines typical of sports cars, it’s evident that this engine spends time in an SUV.
